SARAH WILLARD SAWYER
Sarah Willard Sawyer
Sarah Maria Willard was born July 9, 1849 in Harvard, County Worcester, MA.
to Joseph Kendall and Sarah Wetherbee Willard. Sarah was their only child and
therefore ended a long line of Willards going back to Simon Willard who came
to North America in 1634. One of Simon Willards major accomplishments was that
he negotiated with Squaw Sachem for a 6 mi.by 6 mi. swath of land and founded,
along with Rev. Buckley, Concord, MA. He was Concord's first selectman for many
years before relocating to Lancaster MA. where he was also first selectman.
All of Sarah's Willard ancestors lived in either Lancaster which later became
part of Harvard. Her father Joseph Kendal Willard was the 5th consecutive
Joseph in the Willard family line.
She married Charles Edmund Sawyer Dec. 25th 1872 in Harvard. They had seven
children. They lived in Roxbury (a section of Boston) till 1895 when Charles
became ill. They lived with Sarah's parents until they purchased two acres
from her parents and built a house across the road. Charles died in 1904. After
her husband's death she moved to Lyons, Il to live with her second oldest son
Herbert. In 1925 she moved to Glen Ellyn, Il and lived with her youngest son
Webster and his family. Sarah inherited her parents farm and home at 15 Woodchuck Hill Rd
and the house that she and Charles had built at 12 Woodchuck Hill Rd,
which I am sure gave her a very comfortable living, until she sold them 1927.
Sarah had a nice set of dishes which she distributed to her children. These are what my grandfather Joseph recieved.
